Good research yields good medicine

Bonnie W. Smith

Program executive, Providence Brain Institute and Regional Neurosciences

In this edition of eNeuro, we highlight clinical and translational research that benefits our patients, their families and the community at large.

Our clinicians and scientists are involved in pivotal clinical studies, which enable access to innovative treatments and continuously advance the neurosciences. Our significant patient base allows us to advance clinical knowledge by attracting the most innovative specialists and providing cutting-edge research trials.

This research reinforces Providence’s commitment to provide coordinated care through indications-based practices, outcomes management and cost-effective treatment models.

As we continue to strengthen our stroke services throughout the state, Providence Stroke Center is the only center in Oregon participating in the National Institutes of Health-funded CLEAR III study of clot lysis to evaluate accelerated resolution of intraventricular hemorrhage. This treatment could significantly reduce mortality from this devastating diagnosis.

Additionally, we are expanding our clinical trials for patients with cognitive disorders. Michael Mega, M.D., Ph.D., is participating in two new trials focused on anti-amyloid treatment of mild cognitive impairment.

Our fellowship-trained neuromuscular physicians are working closely with primary care physicians to standardize the diagnosis of peripheral nerve disease and ensure cost-effective and appropriate therapies.

Tracy Sax, M.D., received a grant through the Interhospital Physicians Association to review the effectiveness of certain lab tests in diagnosing neuropathy. Joshua Johnson, M.D., examines the valuable research that links neuropathy to impaired glucose metabolism.

As we proactively prepare for emerging health care reform, our physicians and surgeons are engaged in connecting breakthroughs in research and cost-effective care to patients in the hospital, at home and in the physician’s office.
