Providence Cancer Center specialists share expertise nationally, globally

Providence surgeons, researchers, and radiation and medical oncologists have been active on a national and international scale.

Bryan Bell, M.D., F.A.C.S., D.D.S., medical director of Providence Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Program, served as scientific chairman for the American College of Surgeons 32nd Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions in Las Vegas in April. He also is director of the 2nd International Congress on Technological Advances in Head and Neck Oncology and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery to take place in July. This year, Dr. Bell published in Head & Neck, the Journal of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and the Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery. See the full list.

Surgeon John R. Handy Jr., M.D., director of Providence Thoracic Surgery Program, was named outstanding physician by the Oregon Thoracic Society for 2011. Dr. Handy was a speaker at the society’s annual Chest Disease Conference in February. He also published on outcomes and costs for lung cancer surgery in Cancer Journal and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. See the full list.

In June, Paul Hansen, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of Providence Surgical Oncology, gave an oral presentation at the American College of Surgeons’ regional chapter meeting in Chelan, Wash. He and Providence researchers Michael Gough, Ph.D., and Marka Crittenden, M.D., Ph.D., examined myeloid cell populations in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Dr. Hansen also presented at the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association 9th World Congress in Buenos Aires. Dr. Hansen published in several medical journals recently. See the full list.

Anupama Kurup, M.D., medical director of Providence Cancer Survivor Program and medical oncologist with Providence Oncology and Hematology Care Clinic, spoke on general cancer prevention to the Immigrants and Refugees Community Organization.

Mark Whiteford, M.D., F.A.C.S., medical director of Providence Colon and Rectal Surgery Program, presented at several national and international meetings and medical conferences recently, including American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress, Washington, D.C.; Asia IRCAD, Taiwan; and the Society for American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons annual spring meeting, San Antonio. He also co-led a symposium at the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons annual meeting in Vancouver, B.C., in May.
