Hiring the best – Providence Brain Institute welcomes
new physicians

Bonnie W. Smith

Program director, Providence Brain Institute and Regional Neurosciences

For the past few months Providence Brain Institute has focused on expanding our major programs to ensure greater access to care for our growing number of patients. We are excited to announce the addition of seven new physicians whose specialties include neurosurgery and neurointerventional techniques; multiple sclerosis; epilepsy; orthopedic spine surgery and general neurology.

The brain institute maintains one of the largest and most comprehensive neurointerventional practices in Oregon. Staffed with neurointerventional neurosurgeons and radiologists providing care 24/7, the program offers the complete range of available treatments to treat aneurysms, AVMs and all other types of cranial clots and bleeds.

To further strengthen our neurosurgical interventional program, we are please to introduce Vivek Deshmukh, M.D., who joins us from George Washington University Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Deshmukh, who completed his residency and three fellowships at the esteemed
Barrow Neurological Institute, will serve as medical director of Providence Neurointerventional Services. Dr. Deshmukh will focus his practice on minimally invasive endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disorders, as well as on cranial and spine surgery.

To broaden access to top care for people with MS, we welcome Kiren Kresa-Reahl, M.D., a fellowship-trained MS neurologist, to Providence Multiple Sclerosis Center. Dr. Kresa-Reahl joins Medical Director Stanley Cohan, M.D., Ph.D., and will help build the Pacific Northwest MS Registry.

Julia Toub, M.D., a fellowship-trained epileptologist from the Cleveland Clinic, will practice at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, bringing even greater access to top care on the west side.
Providence Epilepsy Services’ interdisciplinary teams provide a holistic approach to treating patients with epilepsy, including the use of dedicated epilepsy monitoring units at Providence Portland and Providence St. Vincent medical centers.

Our general neurology services continue to grow with the addition of three new physicians. At Providence St. Vincent Medical Center, Kit Yeng Lim, M.D., M.A., a pediatric neurologist, will join Parvez Pohowalla, M.D. Harry Reahl, M.D., joins us as a general neurologist. At Providence Newberg Medical Center we are joined by fellowship-trained neurologist Ellen Andrae, M.D.

Embracing a philosophy of conservative therapy, Providence Spine Services will be strengthened with the addition of J. Rafe Sales, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic spine surgeon who focuses on minimally invasive, complex spine procedures and reconstruction.

We are excited to welcome these experienced and talented physician specialists as we grow our clinical, research and educational programs – and strengthen our commitment to excellence.
