Seven specialists join Providence Brain Institute

This fall, Providence Brain Institute welcomes new physicians and surgeons specializing in multiple sclerosis; epilepsy; neurointerventional procedures and neurosurgery; orthopedic spine surgery; and general and pediatric neurology.

Dr. Deshmukh is one of a few neurosurgeons in the country who offer both direct neurosurgical and minimally invasive endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular disorders. He specializes in cerebral aneurysms, vascular malformations of the brain and spinal cord, cavernous malformations, trigeminal neuralgia, stroke, carotid artery disease, intracranial arterial stenosis, microsurgical bypass techniques, skull base tumors and spinal cord tumors.

Dr. Deshmukh received extensive neurosurgery training at Barrow Neurological Institute, including a residency and three fellowships with a focus in spine, endovascular and cerebrovascular/skull base surgery. He is board-certified.

He has been the principal investigator for a number of clinical studies and served as the director of cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery at George Washington University. His accomplishments include numerous awards and nearly 100 peer-reviewed publications, oral presentations, book chapters, patents and abstract presentations.

Dr. Kresa-Reahl is a neurologist specializing in multiple sclerosis. She is board-certified in neurology and joins Providence after practicing at Capitol Neurology in Charleston, W.Va., for 14 years.

Dr. Kresa-Reahl graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in multiple sclerosis and movement disorders at Georgetown University Hospital.

She was an assistant professor at West Virginia University and served as research advocate for the National MS Society, which awarded her a 2003 volunteer of the year award. She served as the medical director for the MS Clinic of West Virginia, and has been a member of the Consortium of MS Centers since 2003.

Dr. Kresa-Reahl is actively involved in clinical trials to improve treatment of MS.

Dr. Reahl is a general neurologist with an interest in epilepsy and sleep disorders and the treatment of headache without narcotics. He is board-certified in neurology and joins Providence after practicing in neurology clinics in Charleston, W.Va., for 14 years.

Dr. Reahl earned a master’s in physiology and his medical degree at Georgetown University. He completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in epilepsy and sleep medicine at Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Reahl has also taught at Georgetown University Hospital and was an assistant professor at West Virginia University. He has served as chief of the department of neurological medicine at Charleston Area Medical Center and has been an investigator for many clinical trials.

Dr. Sales is an orthopedic spine surgeon focusing on minimally invasive, complex spine procedures and reconstruction. He founded the Summit Spine clinic in 2007. Dr. Sales earned his medical degree from Albany Medical College and completed a residency in orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation at Oregon Health & Science University.

He chose to focus exclusively on spine surgery, and completed a spine surgery fellowship at San Francisco Spine Institute and a spinal trauma fellowship at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Julia Toub, M.D.

Dr. Toub specializes in diagnosing and treating patients with epilepsy. She earned her medical degree at Albany Medical College. She completed an internship in medicine, a residency in neurology and a fellowship in epilepsy and electroencephalography at Cleveland Clinic.

In 2005, Dr. Toub earned the Hesser Family Award for excellence in clinical neurology. She is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and the American Epilepsy Society and has served on the Neurological Institute Hospital Operations Committee to improve quality of patient care.

Dr. Lim earned a master’s degree in microbiology from the University of Texas. She earned her medical degree at Texas A&M University College of Medicine, where she was awarded the Glasgow-Rubin Academic Achievement Commendation for graduating in the top 10 percent of her medical school class. She completed residencies in pediatrics and child neurology at Oregon Health & Science University.

Dr. Lim has volunteered at several clinics that serve the poor and vulnerable, missions to Mexico and western China.

Ellen Andrae, M.D.

Dr. Andrae earned her medical degree from University of California at Irvine College of Medicine. She completed a neurology residency and a neurophysiology fellowship at Harbor UCLA Medical Center. She served as a teaching assistant at San Francisco State University in the department of psychology and as a research assistant at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Andrae is proficient in Swedish.
